Season
2006 / 2007
Everyone knew that the sixth season for the club could be a decisive one. With a
slightly depleted roster and few new faces, it would be up to the core of the
squad to pick up the slack and lead the team through the year; and Captain Marc
Eggleton along with Ben Thompson, Brett Cooper and John Grounds would do just
that. The first game of the season was a real test for the club, but where they
could have easily thrown in the towel, however the team showed some real determination.
The first encounter was against rivals Torbay and it was a defensive struggle.
Despite the Revolution having a limited bench and centre John Grounds breaking
his wrist in the first half, the Taunton team battled on in this close game only
to run out of steam in the final two minutes conceding the game by a handful of
points. However, this did show the team the potential that was there. The best
win of the year maybe came in their second game; severely short on players the
Revolution side fought hard against Broadclyst, a team that had defeated Torbay
the week before. Taunton would battle from behind the whole game to take it in
the fourth quarter.
Grounds would be out for the first half of the season with his injury, and the
team played well without him winning several early games against talented
opposition - opposition that probably should have won but maybe underestimated
the heart of the revolution team. There was a slump in the mid season where the Revolution
struggled to put a W on the board, but then with thanks in part to some player
additions, they pulled themselves back towards the end of the season. Although
the league title was slightly out of reach by this point, the team knuckled down in the Plate
competition where they reached the finals to play against Bridport, a team whom
they had beaten and lost to over the course of the year.
Taunton really showed their metal in the plate taking the game into overtime and
winning in the final seconds by two points.
At the end of this gruelling year the team had seen the most highs and lows in
club history, but they emerged from the battle stronger and full of confidence
for the next year. With the addition of some really key players over the final
two months of the season the Taunton team knew that once training started for
the 2007 / 2008 season everyone would have one thing on their mind - Winning.
