How Revolution Basketball Club came to be
In the summer of 2000 a group of basketball players from the South West, led by
Marc Eggleton and his former coach Alan Barber, put their heads together and
planned to create a new basketball team. They wanted to form a club that catered
for all levels of basketball players, right from the entry level through to a
progression route if that was what the individual aspired to. They felt at the time
that this type of club was not available in the area.
By the end
of August 2000, which was prior to the first season for the
Revolution, they had created a
welcoming environment for experienced and new players alike, and had
approximately 15 active players from areas such as Minehead, Wellington, Yeovil,
Taunton and even one player from Germany. In the first season the team won
Division 2 of the Exeter & District League, surprising many of the opposing
teams. For more details on the first season, and how the club moved on from here check out our 'Season Overview' section of the website found in our
Game
Fixtures section.
We believe its important for players and parents to know a bit
about the person who runs the club, so here's a biography of of the man who runs
and manages the Revolution; Marc Eggleton.
When he's not playing basketball, Marc can generally be found at home with
the new addition to the family, little Gracie, at the gym, or in his suit at the office. Marc is 35 years old,
and was 25 when he started the Taunton Revolution Basketball Club.
Marc is a local basketball player from Taunton, and played a very small amount in
school but was really exposed to the sport at college level where he played for
the
Somerset College of Arts and Technology. He then coached juniors for a while
before joining a team in Crewekerne in the Exeter and District Basketball
League. In the summer of 2000 Marc teamed up with some local players and friends to
start the
Revolution Basketball Club. They wanted local players from Taunton and the
surrounding area to have an alternative
team that would welcome them at any level of skill.
Marc has always worked in the South West and has a background in
Sales, Recruitment and Business Advice. Personal interests include
his daughter Gracie who was born in April 2006 and keeping fit at a local
gym, as well as you guessed it - BASKETBALL!
Marc likes helping others and takes pride in the development of the club and
the achievements that the club has made over the years. Past seasons have seen
the club develop into two teams, and the Revolution has been represented in
Division One and Two of the Exeter & District League and in the Somerset League,
as well as cup competitions. The team has enjoyed great success, winning with
regularity. Marc's enthusiasm and desire for the club to succeed is infectious
and enforced by many of its long term members. Marc has high aspirations for the
longevity of the club, and considers himself to be a leader by example in terms
of his commitment.
Marc possesses the ability to motivate those around him and has worked hard
developing Revolution Basketball Club from scratch, with a personal commitment
of his time and effort and ongoing support from some of the members. The club
also owes a great deal to the former coach of the team Alan Barber.
Revolution Basketball Club also has a great team social life, which fortifies
Marc's endeavour to make all new comers welcome as well as maintaining team
spirit on and off the court.
The club operates on two levels; Revolution
welcomes players of any age, skill level, and experience. Our members are made
up of a variety of ages and experience. We have a regular core of talented
individuals who play and train hard, and want to win. We also have regular
players that come and train for enjoyment and fitness that may not, at this
time, have the desire to play in the league competition, and that's fine.
Training sessions break into different groups at times so that those who play
competitively train on different aspects than some of the other more
recreational players, but the most important things is that everyone enjoys
playing basketball and gains something positive from the sessions.
During the course of the regular season training which is usually between
September and March, the team will still be open to casual members on each
training session, however at times the team will require the use of the whole
court. For this reason, for the second half of the session (9.30pm - 10.30pm)
Coach may request that all other players leave the court and observe parts of
the session, or take part as and when required.
